Worthington goal propels MAU girls soccer in opener

Mount Anthony's Cat Worthington scored the game-winning goal in overtime to lift the Patriots' girls soccer team to a 3-2 win over Essex in the team's season opener on Saturday afternoon.

Essex's Maddy Young scored the lone goal of the first half in the 34th minute before Jordan Mattison tied it in the 55th minute off an assist from Anna Salem. Antonia Pellon gave MAU the lead seven minutes later, assisted by Salem, and they were poised to win the game in regulation before Young scored her second goal with seven seconds to go to tie it at 2-2.

Two minutes into overtime, Worthington fired it past Essex goalie Yasmine Nsame for the winner, assisted by Emma Arlotta.

Nsame made 14 saves and MAU's Madison Breese made eight saves.

MAU improves to 1-0 and hosts the Lady Patriot Classic on Thursday, playing at 7 p.m. against Brattleboro.

ESSEX JUNCTION - The Mount Anthony boys soccer team fell 2-0 on the road Saturday afternoon against Essex.

Tristan Salgado scored in the opening minute to give the Hornets an early lead and the advantage stayed at one until the 77th minute when Ryan Guerino doubled the lead.

Mount Anthony goalie Dylan Woodside made eight saves, while Essex's Tyler Elias had four saves.

MAU drops to 0-1 and travels to Hartford on Saturday at 11 a.m.

BBA runs past St. Johnsbury

MANCHESTER - The Burr and Burton field hockey team opened the season with a 5-1 win over St. Johnsbury on Saturday.

BBA took the lead in the ninth minute when Hannah Hedberg scored unassisted and then 10 minutes later, BBA doubled the advantage when Brianna Mayne scored off assists by Sabina Buffa and Hedberg.

In the second half, Chloe McDonald made it 3-0 early on before St. Johnsbury's Alaura Rich cut the lead to 3-1.

BBA finished off the win with goals by Julia Fillion, assisted by Mayne, and one with 15 seconds left by Buffa, assisted by MacDonald.

Hannah Callen made one save in her debut in the cage, while St. Johnsbury's Melanie Coons had five saves.

"I would commend the play of our three seniors - Sabina Buffa on offense, Hannah Hedberg at midfield and Allie Nowicki on defense - they controlled the field and helped to set the level for the rest of the team," said BBA coach Barb Miceli.

BBA improves to 1-0 and travels to Bellows Falls on Tuesday at 4 p.m.

NORTHFIELD - The Southern Vermont College men's soccer team went up against a quality Ithaca College side Saturday afternoon in the second day of Norwich University's Cadet Kickoff Classic - falling 5-0 to the Bombers at Sabine Field.

IC put home two tallies in the first half before padding its lead with three more in the final 45 minutes.

Ithaca took a strong advantage in ball possession - taking nine corner kicks to SVC's one. The Bombers were credited with 15 shots on goal out of the 43 total takes they had on the day.

Mountaineer freshman keeper Dylan Berg spent the first half of action in net while totaling three saves in the loss (0-2).

Southern Vermont (0-2) is back in action on Wednesday when the Mountaineers head to Anna Maria College for a 7 p.m. non-conference start.

HUNTINGDON, Pa. - Southern Vermont College dropped a tightly-defended, non-conference women's soccer match at Juniata College Saturday evening as the Mountaineers were bested 1-0.

The Eagles got on the scoreboard in the 47th minute with - what proved to be - the only goal of the game. SVC nearly tied it in the final minutes as two takes rang off the posts before the apparent equalizer was headed home, but a foul was called and the goal negated.

Juniata put nine shots on goal in the opening 45 minutes, but SVC senior keeper Melissa Mascari turned them all away for the game to go scoreless into the break.

The Eagles would go on top quickly out of the halftime to give themselves the upper hand. That 1-0 edge was maintained over the next 40 minutes before the visitors felt the pressure of the clock.

Mascari (0-2) ended the night with 15 saves in the effort.

Up next for SVC is a Wednesday night match against Lyndon State, which serves as the finale for the Manchester College Soccer Series, at Applejack Stadium at 7 p.m. in Manchester.

HENNIKER, N.H. - The Southern Vermont College women's volleyball team fell 3-0 to both Fisher College and Curry College on Saturday during the second day of the New England College Tournament.

The Falcons swept the opening match of the day with set scores of 25-21, 25-12, and 25-13.

SVC junior Heidy Benitez led the Mountaineers with seven kills while adding 13 digs to her line. Sophomore Sarah Billow followed with six kills and 10 digs, and freshman Nikki Ramirez had two kills to go along with her team-leading 17 digs. Bennington College freshman Kemly Derby popped up 13 assists and six digs for the Mountaineers.

In the second match, Curry defeated the Mountaineers in their second match of the day with set scores of 25-11, 25-19, and 25-15.

Billow notched a team-best 12 kills for Southern Vermont to set a new career-high in a three-set match; she also added five digs to her line. Benitez registered five kills and a team-best 15 digs, and Derby put up 16 assists and four aces in the effort.

The Mountaineers (0-3) are back at it next weekend with New Paltz State's Hawk Invitational; SVC will take on Montclair State at 3 p.m. and Mount Saint Mary College at 7 p.m. Friday night in the first round of the tournament.

BENNINGTON - The Catamount Bow Hunters will host their final 3D shoot of the year on Sept. 17.

Registration is from 7 a.m. to noon and costs $10 for adults, $5 for youths and cubs are free with paid adult. Food and beverages are available and everyone is welcome.

ARLINGTON - Arlington Memorial High School & Middle School has three coach openings for the 2017-2018 school year: middle school boys head basketball coach, varsity boys head basketball coach, and varsity baseball head coach.

MANCHESTER - The Maple Leaf Half Marathon and Kotler 5K will take place on September 9.

The event begins and ends at the Dana L. Thompson Memorial Park. Vermont Route 30 will be closed from the entrance to the rec park to the button roundabout, both east and westbound, from 8am to approximately 8:15 a.m. to allow the half-marathon and 5K runners safe passage. Vermont Route 7A will be closed from the button round-a-bout to Seminary Ave., southbound, from 8am to approximately 8:30 a.m. to allow the half-marathon runners safe passage.

The northbound lane will be open, please DO NOT go south in the northbound lane! All other roads along the course will remain open to traffic, so please use caution!

The Maple Leaf Half Marathon and Kotler 5K is a collaboration between the Manchester Lions Club and Make-A-Wish Vermont. All proceeds are donated back to the community in the form of scholarships, grants, hearing aids, eyeglasses and wishes.
