SVC's Brandmeyer collects Third Runner of the Week

2017 Oct 24

The New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) announced its weekly award winners with Southern Vermont College senior captain Marc Brandmeyer claiming his third Men's Cross Country Runner of the Week honor of the season.

Brandmeyer was the first Mountaineer finisher on Saturday at a tough Golden Bear Invitational hosted by Western New England University. The senior placed ninth overall in a field of 106 runners - posting a split time of 5:38 per mile on the 8K meter course. His mark of 27:57 was 25 seconds faster than any 8K time that he had previously charted this year.

Monday's award is Brandmeyer's ninth NECC Runner of the Week accolade of his career.

The Mountaineers are off this weekend as they rest and gear up for the league's championship meet set to take place Saturday, October 28 at Stanley Park in Westfield, Mass.

The NECC announced its weekly award winners on Monday with Southern Vermont College senior goalie Melissa Mascari being named the league's Women's Soccer Player of the Week.

Mascari was phenomenal in Southern Vermont's two games last week. She allowed only one goal in 200 minutes of NECC action-recording five saves per match. Mascari was instrumental in helping the team tie the program record for the most consecutive games without a loss (1996, 6-0-1) as she first blanked Mitchell College 3-0 on Monday for SVC to tie its longest-ever winning streak of six. She came up with some great saves against Elms College on Saturday during a 1-1 draw. The netminder turned away two EC shots in extra sessions as the Blazers failed to defeat the Mountaineers for the first time in 11 all-time meetings.

Monday's accolade is Mascari's third Player of the Week of her career after she received it twice in 2015.

SVC swept the women's soccer awards as freshman Jayne Wierzbicki collected her second NECC Rookie of the Week honor of the year. She tallied five points through the team's two games-scoring twice at Mitchell before assisting on Southern Vermont's lone goal of the Saturday tie with Elms.

Mascari and the Mountaineers are back in action on Tuesday when they visit Becker College for a 7 p.m. NECC showdown.
