SVC men's soccer eliminated from NECC tournament

Three second-half goals paved the way for the No. 5 seed Newbury College to walk out with a 4-0 upset victory over No. 4 Southern Vermont College Tuesday afternoon at Everett Field in the first round of the New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) men's soccer tournament.

Newbury got on the board in the 30th minute of action to take a 1-0 lead into halftime. Ten minutes into the second half, the visitors found the back of the net once again before padding their lead with a third tally just five minutes later. A final goal in the 78th minute put the game away and sent the Nighthawks to the next round.

Newbury sophomore Nilton De Andrade had a spectacular afternoon as he scored three times. Nighthawk sophomore keeper Chris Tran made five saves as he evened his season record between the pipes to 3-3.

SVC freshman goalie Dylan Berg turned away six NC shots in the loss (5-15).

Newbury improves to 5-14 on the year and will take on No. 1 seed Mitchell College on Friday at 2 p.m. in the conference semifinals.

SVC concludes the 2017 campaign with an overall record of 5-15.

The No. 4 seed Southern Vermont College volleyball team swept No. 5 Bay Path in straight sets Tuesday night to move on to the NECC semifinals.

The Mountaineers won the match by scores of 25-16, 25-23 and 25-16.

SVC was led by Liv Sowles, who had 20 kills in the match. Nikki Ramirez also had a strong day for the Mountaineers with 10 kills.

Heidy Benitez led the team in digs with 12, while Ramirez had 10 and Sowles had nine in the match.

On the defensive side, Kemly Derby had a pair of blocks for SVC.
