Molly of Higganum, Conn. traveled to Roger University in Bristol, RI.

2017 Nov 27

On Friday November 10, 2017 Molly, Southern Vermont College student and two faculty members traveled to Roger Williams University in Bristol, RI to experience first-hand the facilities, amenities, and culture surrounding students enrolled in the Criminal Justice Masters program there.

Margaret Adkins and Renee Merges, both Assistant Professors teaching criminal justice in the Department of Social Sciences at SVC, drove senior Kristiana Goldup and juniors Molly Madore and Amber Parker to RWU. Initiation of the "4+1" articulation agreement between SVC and RWU this year has generated interest and excitement among faculty and staff. The students who toured RWU on this trip are interested in pursuing a Master's Degree following graduation from SVC. Kristiana Goldup has an application pending and will in all likelihood begin taking her first two RWU graduate courses online in the spring.

The group met with Admissions Staff, including Marcus Hanscom, Director of Graduate Admissions at Roger Williams University, in their offices on the campus quad. They were all given informational materials and RWU Masters T-shirts. From the Admissions Office, they walked across campus to the Student Center and Cafeteria for lunch with several students who are currently enrolled in the CJ Masters program; the Dean of the School of Justice, Eric F. Bronson; and Professor Sean Varano. Our students had an opportunity to talk about coursework, employment opportunities, housing options, research opportunities, and scheduling of classes.

Following the lunch discussion session, they visited the School of Architecture, where Professor Varano offered a video presentation about the program. Along with the Dean, Professor Varano described the application procedure to our students. Kristy, Amber, and Molly asked questions about the process, the cost, opportunities to work as research assistants, and other related matters. Following the informational session, they were taken on a walking tour of the campus, which is located directly on the water.

The three participating students were engaged and enthusiastic. The questions they asked showed maturity and preparation. We were welcomed to campus and treated with courtesy and hospitality by administration, faculty, and staff at Roger Williams University. They are looking forward to having our students join their program.
