On Thursday, October 12, 2017, 4 students from the McCormick Division of Business traveled to Dean College in Franklin, MA to participate in the IACBE Student Ethics Case Competition.

Sponsored by the International Accreditation Council for Business Education, the day-long competition challenged students to assess the ethical implications of a current business case and make recommendations for how to move that organization forward in a more socially-responsible manner.

The team is co-advised by Division professors Dr. Jeb Gorham and Dr. Stacey Hills.

Students Kelsey Carrera (Sr. Queensbury NY), Lexia Gillette (Sr., Pittsfield MA), Allyson McNamee (Jr., Freehold NJ), Ryan Stowell (Sr, W.Springfield MA), participated in the event, which centered on ride-share company Uber. Although they were not among the top 3 finishers, it was a valuable experience for the team, and they are already looking to return next year.

According to Stowell, "The competition was a great opportunity to see where we as SVC students stand academically compared to students from other schools. There is always room for improvement but I thought as a first year team we addressed the issues and gave recommendations that were both ethically and professionally accurate." The opportunity to watch the other competitors was not lost on McNamee, who noted that "it was interesting to see the other teams' perspectives on the issue and see how they presented their findings as well."

For Carrera, it was her first time participating on such a case team before. "It was awesome to work with my fellow classmates and see how well we worked together. We put all of our different skill sets to use. It definitely helped me learn how to approach things in a different way." As an aspiring business owner, Gillette agreed, noting that the ability to think quickly, creatively and intelligently was important. "SVC has provided me with this amazing experience that I will be able to use in my future business endeavors."

The team will continue to work together and bring in new classmates as they prepare for their next competition at SUNY Plattsburgh in March 2018.
